984414196Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 46.2-738.1 as follows:
§ 46.2-738.1. Special license plates; members of the [
Amateur American ] Radio Relay
League.
On receipt of an application therefor and written evidence that the
applicant is a member, the Commissioner shall issue special license plates to
members of the [ Amateur
American ] Radio Relay League. When so requested and feasible, the
license plates issued by the Commissioner under this section to any applicant
who (i) is licensed by the federal government or an agency thereof as an
amateur radio operator and (ii) has radio transmitting and receiving equipment
permanently installed in the motor vehicle on which license plates issued under
this section are to be displayed shall bear the applicant's official call
letters and/or numbers. If more than one application is made under this
section for license plates bearing the same combination of letters and/or
numbers, the Department shall accept only the first such application.
License plates issued under this section shall be issued only to persons who are the titled owners of the vehicles on which the license plates are to be displayed and shall be displayed only on those vehicles.
[ The provisions of subdivisions 1 and 2 of subsection B of §
46.2-725 shall not apply to license plates issued under this
section. ]
