SUMMARY:

Concealed handgun permit. Makes several changes to the concealed weapons permit statute to (i) increase the duration of the permit from two to five years, (ii) require fingerprints to be provided with the application to facilitate a national criminal records check, (iii) require the State Police rather than the Supreme Court to prepare the application form which is required to be used, (iv) provide for automatic revocation of a permit upon the happening of a disqualifying event during the term of the permit and to allow for enforcement of this provision, requires the State Police to notify the issuing court upon receipt in the central criminal records exchange of a record of arrest, conviction or occurrence of a disqualifying event, (v) clarify the maximum fee for processing a permit application, including conducting an FBI records check is $50 and that the fee is not payable until the application is accepted by the clerk for processing, and (vi) grant reciprocity to persons issued a permit in another jurisdiction if the requirements for issuance in that jurisdiction are similar to Virginia's law and the validity of the permit can be checked via an instantaneous verification system.
