SUMMARY:

Magistrates; compensation. Eliminates the authority granted to localities in 1995 to supplement the salary of a magistrate. The bill allows localities to continue to pay the supplement until such time as the magistrate's total compensation from the state and the locality would exceed the total compensation payable to him on January 1, 1997.

The bill is recommended by the Committee on District Courts following JLARC's recommendation (House Document 11).
