SUMMARY:

Preference for veterans for employment with the Commonwealth and its political subdivisions. Effective July 1, 1998, provides certain preferences for "veterans" who apply for employment with the Commonwealth and requires that such preferences be applied in a manner consistent with federal and state law. "Veteran" means any person who has received an honorable discharge and (i) provided more than 180 consecutive days of full-time, active-duty service in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, or reserve components thereof, including the National Guard, or (ii) has a service-connected disability rating fixed by the United States Veterans Administration. The bill also requests the Department of Veterans' Affairs, in conjunction with other named agencies and organizations, to conduct a study of the bill and the impact on localities if the bill was also applied to them.
