SUMMARY:

Hybrid canines. Authorizes localities to enact a permitting system for hybrid canine and prohibits ownership of a hybrid canine without obtaining a permit. Only those who owned a hybrid canine on or before October 1, 1996 may obtain a permit. Permitted hybrid canines must be sterilized, identified by means of a tattoo, and confined in a specified way when on the property of the owner and not under the direct supervision and control of the owner. Owners of permitted hybrid canines must notify the locality if the animal becomes loose, bites or attacks another a person or animal, dies, or has been moved to a different location. While not on the property of the owner, the animal must be kept on a leash and under the control of the owner. Violation of the law is a Class 1 misdemeanor. Localities may set a fee to cover the cost of the permitting system.
