1997 SESSION
HB 2865 Practice of podiatry.
Introduced by: Eric I. Cantor | all patrons ... notes | add to my profiles
SUMMARY:
Practice of podiatry. Amends the definition of the practice of podiatry to include amputation proximal to the metatarsal-phalangeal joints, and that such procedure must be performed in a licensed hospital. As provided, the scope of practice for podiatry does not include the amputation of the entire foot. This provision would enable podiatric surgeons to remove diseased or infected tissue at the same time as a toe amputation. Usually, the decision to perform a combined procedure cannot be made until the surgery is underway because the extent of the diseased tissue is not known until surgery. As a result, delay in treatment and exposure to additional surgery and anesthesia risks increase the likelihood of poor outcomes and increased costs to the patient.
