SUMMARY:
Possession of beepers on school property. Allows pupils to possess and use beepers in the public schools upon approval by the school principal, after submission of documentation by such pupil that the possession and use are for lawful and essential activities. Under current law, persons convicted of possession or control of a beeper or similar portable communications device on the grounds of any public or private elementary, middle or secondary school are guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. An exception is made for teachers, safety and law-enforcement personnel, and others who use a beeper in a legal volunteer activity, trade, or business, or for medical necessity.
