HB 2444 Practitioners; continued competence requirements.

Introduced by: Gladys B. Keating | all patrons    ...    notes | add to my profiles

SUMMARY:

Continued competence requirements. Authorizes the Board of Medicine to prescribe by regulation such requirements as may be necessary to ensure continued practitioner competence. The regulations may include continuing education, testing, and/or any other requirements. In promulgating the regulations, the Board will consider such factors as the need to promote ethical practice, an appropriate standard of care, patient safety, application of new medical technology, appropriate communication with patients, and knowledge of the changing health care systems. The Board is also authorized to approve persons who provide or accredit such programs. This provision reflects the recommendations of the Board of Medicine's Study of the Need for Requiring for Mandatory Continuing Medical Education pursuant to HJR 68 of 1996. The Board regulates many professions, with various needs for maintaining competence. Therefore, for some professions or subsets thereof, the Board may, for example, wish to require testing at intervals or hands-on experience; for other groups, the Board may decide to require continuing education or some other activity.
