1997 SESSION
HB 2087 School board salaries in Powhatan County.
Introduced by: John Watkins | all patrons ... notes | add to my profiles
SUMMARY:
School board salaries. Increases the salary of the members of the school board of Powhatan County from $1,500 to $5,000. Section 22.1-32 establishes the maximum salaries for most school boards in Virginia (a few school boards establish salaries by charter or local ordinance). The requirements for increasing school boards' salaries have been substantially revised by the General Assembly, with the advent of elected school boards. The 1996 amendments require that any school board must, prior to requesting the General Assembly's consideration of an increase in the statutory annual salary limits, take an affirmative vote on the requested increase. Any school board with elected members, prior to being awarded a salary increase, must take an affirmative vote on a specific salary increase within the limits established in the law. All school board salary increases must be adopted "consistent with procedures applicable to salary changes for the relevant local governing body," and additional salaries for school board chairmen must be approved through "an appropriate resolution" by any elected school board or, if the school board is appointed, by the governing body.
