976028757WHEREAS, W. G. "Wink" Steele, Jr., a resident of Bristol and a long-time leader for the Virginia Education Association in Southwest Virginia, died on November 10, 1996; and
WHEREAS, a native of Covington, W. G. Steele was a graduate of Emory and Henry College and earned his master's degree from East Tennessee State University; and
WHEREAS, W. G. Steele was a teacher in the Bristol public schools prior to becoming the director of Southwest Virginia Uniserv for the Virginia Education Association; and
WHEREAS, since 1974, W. G. Steele worked with the educational associations of the City of Bristol and the Counties of Bland, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, and Wythe Counties to represent the teachers and improve the educational opportunities for the children of those localities; and
WHEREAS, also a representative of the Virginia Education Association in Richmond, W. G. Steele traveled many miles and put in long hours representing the interests of the teachers of Southwest Virginia; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his effective advocacy for teachers, W. G. Steele gave generously of his time as a Boy Scout leader for many years and was an active member of the State Street United Methodist Church in Bristol; and
WHEREAS, an exceptional leader, W. G. Steele will be missed by the hundreds of Southwest Virginia educators he represented with such dedication, conviction, and personal attention; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the loss of a singularly valuable and committed Virginian, W. G. Steele, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of W. G. Steele, Jr., as an expression of the high esteem in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
