1997 SESSION
WHEREAS, Noman M. Cole, Jr., a nuclear engineer and civic activist who was instrumental in the cleanup of the Potomac River, died on February 1, 1997; and
WHEREAS, a resident of the Mason Neck area of Fairfax County, Noman Cole was a native of South Carolina who earned his engineering degree from the University of Florida and was a graduate of the Atomic Energy Commission's Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory Post Graduate School in Nuclear Engineering; and
WHEREAS, for many years a prominent nuclear engineer, Noman Cole was a leader in the inspection and repair of the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor and was on the panel that reviewed plans to stabilize the Chernobyl nuclear reactor on behalf of the government of Ukraine; and
WHEREAS, Noman Cole was active in many environmental causes, at the local, state, and regional levels, including his effective efforts to improve the water quality of the Potomac River; and
WHEREAS, Noman Cole served as a technical and policy advisor in the areas of energy policy, water pollution control, and water resources management to Virginia governors John Dalton and Linwood Holton; and
WHEREAS, Noman Cole served on the Governor's Environmental Council during the 1970s and on the Governor's Advisory Commission on Radioactive Waste in the 1980s; and
WHEREAS, interested in local environmental efforts and initiatives, Noman Cole headed a citizen-county task force to review sewage treatment in the northern part of Fairfax in the 1970s, served on the Fairfax County Goals Advisory Commission, and recently headed a blue ribbon commission on spending priorities and reform; and
WHEREAS, Noman Cole's many invaluable contributions to environmental preservation and improvement won him recognition from Washingtonian magazine, which named him one of its 10 Washingtonians of the Year in 1971, and from the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, which honored him as Man of the Year in 1974; and
WHEREAS, a recognized expert on nuclear energy and a dedicated advocate for the environment, Noman Cole effectively combined his scientific background with his deep commitment to environmental causes to the benefit of the citizens of the Washington metropolitan area and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of a singularly accomplished and valuable Virginian, Noman M. Cole, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Noman M. Cole, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's great respect for his memory.
