976033713WHEREAS, the Virginia Quilt Museum was organized in 1991, incorporated in 1992, and opened as a public museum on August 25, 1995; and
WHEREAS, following many hours of hard work by volunteers, the historic Warren-Sipe House in Harrisonburg was renovated and refurbished to serve as the home of the Virginia Quilt Museum; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the Virginia Quilt Museum is to collect, preserve, and interpret quilts and related artifacts and documentation for the benefit of the public; and
WHEREAS, to further this mission, the museum will serve as a repository for quilts of historic, aesthetic, or technical significance; educate the public about the history and significance of quilting; serve as a resource center for the study of quilts; encourage the continued documentation and conservation of quilts; and encourage the continued practice of quilting by teaching technical skills and providing examples of excellence; and
WHEREAS, in its short history as a museum, the Virginia Quilt Museum has already attracted both attention and significant numbers of visitors; and
WHEREAS, many publications, including those of the American Automobile Association and the Smithsonian Institution, have commented favorably on the Virginia Quilt Museum; and
WHEREAS, in just over a year, the Virginia Quilt Museum has attracted over 3,500 visitors from 48 states and 17 foreign countries; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Quilt Museum has participated or has plans to participate in many area functions, including Historic Garden Week and a planned exhibit in the summer of 1997 in cooperation with several other museums in the Harrisonburg-Staunton area; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Quilt Museum, which serves Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region, is one of only five quilt museums in the nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the Virginia Quilt Museum be hereby designated the Official Quilt Museum of the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Joan Knight, president of the Virginia Quilt Museum, in recognition of its designation as the Official Quilt Museum of the Commonwealth.
