WHEREAS, Diameng Pa, a senior at Wakefield High School in Arlington, was named a finalist in the Westinghouse National Science Fair, the most prestigious such competition in the country; and

WHEREAS, Diameng Pa is one of only 40 finalists nationwide, selected from a group of more than 1,000 science students from around the country; and

WHEREAS, Diameng Pa's project, on which he has been working for three years, involves the effects of acid rain on soybeans, one of the largest and most important cash crops in the country; and

WHEREAS, under the guidance of teachers Belinda Shenk and Bobbie Whittier, and with the essential assistance of George Washington University plant physiologist Robert Donaldson, Diameng Pa's ongoing research earned him the $1,000 scholarship from Westinghouse and advancement to the higher rounds of the competition; and

WHEREAS, a native of Batdambang, Cambodia, Diameng Pa and his family fled the brutal Khmer Rouge regime in that country in 1981, ultimately emigrating to the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Diameng Pa, through inspiration, hard work, and the support of his teachers and advisors, now ranks among the elite of the nation's science students; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Diameng Pa on his prestigious and well-earned honor; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Diameng Pa as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his accomplishments and best wishes on his future endeavors.
