WHEREAS, the women's basketball team from Shenandoah University, in Winchester, completed the 1995-96 basketball season in a triumphant fashion, winning the Dixie Conference tournament; and

WHEREAS, after completing a regular season marked by a four-game winning streak and several close losses to larger, NCAA Division II schools, the Division III Hornets from Shenandoah University entered the Dixie Conference tournament as decided underdogs; and

WHEREAS, in the quarter-finals, the Hornets upended the second-seeded Panthers from Ferrum College, 69-65, to set the tone for the tournament; and

WHEREAS, facing Averett College in the semi-finals, a team they had defeated at the end of the regular season, the Shenandoah Hornets took an exciting one-point victory to advance to the title game; and

WHEREAS, facing top-seeded Christopher Newport in the finals, the Hornets avenged two earlier losses to the Captains and gained their first-ever victory over Christopher Newport, 58-55; and

WHEREAS, in capturing the school's first Dixie Conference championship, the Hornets from Shenandoah University also became the first team to qualify for the NCAA Division III national tournament; and

WHEREAS, the success of the Shenandoah University women's basketball team is a tribute to the coaching of Kathy Orsini, the talent, teamwork, and perseverance of the players, and the support of the students and faculty of Shenandoah University; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Shenandoah University women's basketball team on the successful conclusion of its 1995-96 campaign; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Coach Kathy Orsini in honor of the Hornets' first Dixie Conference championship.
