Commending Debbie Ryan on her Twentieth Season as Head Coach of the Women's Basketball Team at the University of Virginia.

WHEREAS, women's basketball has been a part of the Virginia Athletic Department for 23 years and the 1997 season marks Head Coach Debbie Ryan's Twentieth Season as the head of the program; and

WHEREAS, Coach Ryan has directed the Cavaliers to 13 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing to the "Sweet 16" 10 times and making three straight trips to the Final Four in 1990, 1991 and 1992; and

WHEREAS, Coach Ryan's teams have won 10 ACC regular-season titles, including the last six, and four ACC Conference Tournaments; and

WHEREAS, Coach Ryan established an ACC conference record of 177 wins and 60 losses in her first nineteen seasons making her the winningest coach ever in ACC competition; and

WHEREAS, Coach Ryan holds a career won-loss record of 439-147 putting her among the nation's elite coaches in winning percentage (.747); and

WHEREAS, Coach Ryan has been ACC Coach of the Year six time (1984), 1986, 1987, 1991, 1993 and 1995); and

WHEREAS, Coach Ryan was names Naismith Coach of the Year in 1991 by the Atlanta Tipoff Club; and

WHEREAS, 100 percent of the athletes on her teams who completed their four years of eligibility graduated from the University; and

WHEREAS, Coach Ryan is not only recognized in the coaching ranks but in the statewide community being voted the Outstanding Woman of the Year by the Virginia Women's Forum in 1991; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Debbie Ryan on her Twentieth Anniversary as the Head Coach of the Women's Basketball Team at the University of Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Coach Ryan as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations on her superior record and unparalleled success as the winningest coach ever in ACC competition.
