WHEREAS, the board of directors of the George C. Marshall Center at Dodona Manor in Leesburg has been planning for the celebration next year of the 50th anniversary of the Marshall Plan; and

WHEREAS, due to the extraordinary generosity of Helga, Christian, and Erivan Haub, those plans are measurably closer to fruition; and

WHEREAS, owners of one of the largest chains of retail food stores in the world, the Haubs are dedicated to the advancement of transatlantic dialogue, international trade, education, historic preservation, and environmental protection; and

WHEREAS, with strong and long-standing ties to America, Erivan Haub was awarded in 1995 the German-American Chamber of Commerce's Leo M. Goodman Award in recognition of his contributions to promoting trade and business cooperation between Germany and the United States; and

WHEREAS, in 1996, Erivan Haub joined the Prince of Wales, Giovanni Agnelli of Italy, and Americans Vernon Walters and David Rockefeller as an Honorary Chairman of the George C. Marshall Center at Dodona Manor; and

WHEREAS, in 1994, Helga Haub was the first European to join the Board of Directors of the George C. Marshall International Center, and she has served with many other prominent organizations dedicated to the improvement of international laws governing the preservation and protection of the environment; and

WHEREAS, Christian Haub has joined his parents as a member of the Marshall Center's Marshall Legacy Trust and is providing substantial funding for the Marshall Center's 1997 activities commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Marshall Plan; and

WHEREAS, Helga and Erivan Haub have donated more than $1.5 million to the George C. Marshall Center, in gratitude for all that the Marshall Plan meant to Germany in the post-World War II years; and

WHEREAS, the Haubs' contribution will enable the center to stabilize its financial situation and proceed with plans for the anniversary; and

WHEREAS, the Haubs' outstanding generosity will help to preserve the legacy of George C. Marshall for future generations and will encourage other European governments, corporations, and individuals to join them in providing funds for the Marshall Center; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Helga, Christian, and Erivan Haub for their exceptional generosity on behalf of the George C. Marshall Center; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Helga and Erivan Haub as an expression of the deep appreciation of the General Assembly and the people of Virginia.
