972713655WHEREAS, Hampton W. Thomas, a prominent Roanoke lawyer and a former member of the Roanoke City Council, died on September 28, 1996; and
WHEREAS, a graduate of Roanoke College and the University of Virginia Law School, Hampton Thomas practiced law in Roanoke for nearly 40 years; and
WHEREAS, elected to the Roanoke City Council four times, Hampton Thomas served the citizens of the city with great distinction for over 13 years; and
WHEREAS, Hampton Thomas served as a member of the council's audit and personnel committees, as a member of the executive committee of the Fifth Planning District Commission, and as a member of the executive and legislative committees of the Virginia Municipal League; and
WHEREAS, interested in the economic vitality of the Roanoke region, Hampton Thomas was instrumental in the creation of the Roanoke Valley Industrial Fact Finding Commission and chaired the Water Resources Committee, which played a key role in the resolution of water and sewer problems remaining from the 1976 annexation; and
WHEREAS, Hampton Thomas was a highly respected public servant and regional leader who made lasting contributions to the economic prosperity of the Roanoke Valley; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the death of Hampton W. Thomas; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Hampton W. Thomas as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
