1997 SESSION
WHEREAS, on September 24, 1996, a fiery traffic accident on Interstate 581 in Roanoke nearly claimed the lives of two young people; and
WHEREAS, the two teenagers were in a car that ran under a tractor-trailer, was dragged nearly 500 feet, and burst into flames and ignited the contents of the trailer, creating a horrifying scene of fire, smoke, and twisted, charred metal; and
WHEREAS, that the two people in the car survived the calamitous accident was due wholly to the selfless heroism of Marine Staff Sergeant Frankie Lee Hall; and
WHEREAS, traveling from the Marine recruiting office to downtown Roanoke, Sergeant Hall witnessed the accident, observed a dazed young woman wandering near the wreck, and saw that her young male companion remained trapped in the car; and
WHEREAS, with no thought to his personal safety, Sergeant Hall immediately worked to free the trapped passenger, despite the presence of fire and the imminent danger of explosion; and
WHEREAS, thanks to the heroism of Sergeant Hall, two young people escaped a horrifying death and suffered only minor injuries; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend most highly the courageous actions of Marine Staff Sergeant Frankie Lee Hall; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Marine Staff Sergeant Frankie Lee Hall as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for his quick-thinking, his selflessness, and his extraordinary courage.
