WHEREAS, Susan Bontecou DuVal of McLean, a well-known artist and the wife of former Senator Clive L. DuVal II, died on January 4, 1997; and
WHEREAS, a native of New York and a graduate of Vassar College, Susan DuVal moved to the Washington area during World War II, working for the Office of Strategic Services; and
WHEREAS, Susan DuVal studied art at American University in Washington, D.C., and exhibited her paintings in the Northern Virginia area; and
WHEREAS, Susan DuVal was a director of the Emerson Gallery in McLean, a trustee of the Washington Gallery of Modern Art, and a director of the McLean Project for the Arts, which recently honored her for her work; and
WHEREAS, long interested in environmental causes, Susan DuVal was a member of the Nature Conservancy, the Natural Resource Defense Council, and the Environmental Defense Fund; and
WHEREAS, a woman of varied interests, great energy, and considerable talent, Susan DuVal will be sorely missed by her many friends and colleagues in Northern Virginia, Richmond, and throughout the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of Susan Bontecou DuVal, a lady of surpassing grace, wit, and talent; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Susan Bontecou DuVal as an expression of the General Assembly's great respect for her memory.
