1997 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Sudler Flag of Honor is the most exclusive and the most prestigious award in the world for high school concert bands; and
WHEREAS, awarded by the John Philip Sousa Foundation, the Sudler Flag of Honor recognizes high school bands that have demonstrated consistent excellence over a period of several years and has been given to only 34 high school bands in the United States and Canada in the 14 years of its existence; and
WHEREAS, in 1996, only two high school bands in the country were recipients of the Sudler Flag of Honor, one of which was Fairfax County's W. T. Woodson High School concert band; and
WHEREAS, the Woodson High School band has established an enviable record of success over the past 14 years, winning superior ratings every year in the Virginia District Band Festivals, being selected as a Virginia Honor Band nine times, and earning superior ratings in every State Marching Band Festival attended over the past 13 years; and
WHEREAS, one of the key elements for selection for the Sudler Flag of Honor is the band's director, who must have at least seven years' tenure; and
WHEREAS, John E. Casagrande, Director of Bands at Woodson High School, joined the Woodson faculty in 1982, was named Woodson's Teacher of the Year in 1990, and has been an irreplaceable part of the exceptional success of Woodson's bands for 15 years; and
WHEREAS, the extraordinary consistency of the W. T. Woodson concert band, and the effort, dedication, and talent necessary to achieve that consistent excellence are hallmarks of the Woodson's band program, a program that richly deserves the distinct honor bestowed on it by the John Philip Sousa Foundation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly congratulate the W. T. Woodson High School concert band on its selection for the Sudler Flag of Honor; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John E. Casagrande as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the superb record of the W. T. Woodson High School concert band.
