SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 236
On the death of Bodi.

WHEREAS, Bodi, a three-year-old German shepherd assigned to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, was killed in the line of duty on July 26, 1996; and

WHEREAS, a two-year veteran of the Orange County K-9 unit, Bodi was a highly trained and exceptionally competent member of a law-enforcement team; and

WHEREAS, Bodi was trained in all aspects of patrol work, including tracking, building searches, criminal apprehension, and narcotics detection; and

WHEREAS, working closely with his handler, Sergeant Tim Murphy, Bodi was credited with saving three lives in 1996 alone, had found illegal drugs in over 30 cars, and had played an integral role in the apprehension of numerous dangerous felons; and

WHEREAS, acquired and trained through the generosity of local citizens and businesses, who raised the necessary $6,000 in only two weeks, Bodi quickly repaid his benefactors through his crime-fighting and public relations skills; and

WHEREAS, on July 26, while pursuing a suspected felon, Bodi was shot and killed, possibly saving his friend and handler, Sergeant Murphy, from harm; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the death of Bodi, a dedicated and effective member of the Orange County Sheriff's Department; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sergeant Tim Murphy in remembrance of the courage and unquestioning loyalty of Bodi.
