973188717WHEREAS, Evelyn Ash Fenner, a native of Norfolk and a former teacher at Booker T. Washington and Norview High Schools, died on November 17, 1996; and
WHEREAS, educated in the public schools of Norfolk, Evelyn Fenner earned her undergraduate degree from Virginia State University and her master's degree from Columbia University; and
WHEREAS, after briefly teaching dance, Evelyn Fenner became the first African-American to teach physical education to African-American elementary school students in Norfolk; and
WHEREAS, Evelyn Fenner then moved to Booker T. Washington High School, where she taught health and physical education for more than 40 years and worked with several others to produce outstanding dramatic presentations for the school and the community; and
WHEREAS, Evelyn Fenner concluded her long and successful teaching career at Norview High School, where she taught English, drama, and French; and
WHEREAS, in addition to her teaching duties, Evelyn Fenner volunteered with the Department of Parks and Recreation, teaching dancing and drama, and devoted many hours of service to other worthy community organizations; and
WHEREAS, throughout a long and exceptionally productive life, Evelyn Fenner devoted her time, energy, and very considerable talents to the teaching of the young and to the betterment of her community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of a dedicated and talented Virginian, Evelyn Ash Fenner; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Evelyn Ash Fenner as an expression of the General Assembly's great respect for her memory.
