1997 SESSION
WHEREAS, in 1995, the first year of Roanoke's "Bikes or Bust" campaign, the program raised funds to purchase 620 bicycles for the children of the Roanoke Valley; and
WHEREAS, in 1996, William E. "Slam" Duncan, the morning DJ for Roanoke radio station WJLM, raised the goal to 1,000 bicycles and teamed with the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program to achieve the goal; and
WHEREAS, as part of the "Bikes or Bust . . . Going for a Grand" campaign, "Slam" Duncan and Marine Staff Sergeant Steve Gardner broadcast around the clock from a camper trailer suspended 150 feet in the air by a crane above the Tanglewood Mall; and
WHEREAS, during their marathon, wind-tossed session, "Slam" Duncan and Steve Gardner received calls from hundreds of people, including many celebrities, supporting their novel campaign to benefit the children of the Roanoke Valley; and
WHEREAS, local businesses donated the costs for the entire promotion, local television station WDBJ co-sponsored and heavily promoted the event, and many local volunteers assisted with such tasks as assembling hundreds of bicycles; and
WHEREAS, the "Bikes or Bust" campaign exceeded its goal of 1,000 bicycles by more than 50 percent, ultimately providing the amazing total of 1,511 bicycles to boys and girls throughout the Roanoke Valley; and
WHEREAS, through the witty, resourceful, and innovative efforts of "Slam" Duncan and Steve Gardner, the homes of many Roanoke Valley children were made a little happier during the 1996 holidays; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the General Assembly of Virginia commend William E. "Slam" Duncan, Staff Sergeant Steve Gardner, WJLM Radio, the U.S. Marine Corps, and all of the other organizations and volunteers who made "Bikes or Bust" such a remarkable success; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to William E. "Slam" Duncan and Staff Sergeant Steve Gardner in honor of their extraordinary efforts on behalf of the children of the Roanoke Valley.
