HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 27
Requesting the Department of Historic Resources to designate the Town of Haymarket as an historic landmark.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 2, 1997

WHEREAS, the Town of Haymarket had its genesis in colonial times, upon the opening of the Carolina Trail in 1722; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Haymarket, situated at the crossroads of the Old North-South Indian Trail, the Carolina Road and the East-West fork of the Dumfries Road, contributed to the expansion of our country; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Haymarket, known earlier as "Red House," was host to the Revolutionary War militia and to many famous founders of our country, including George Washington and Lafayette, and later to Generals Lee, Longstreet, and Stuart; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Haymarket has sought to preserve its identity by adopting an historic overlay ordinance and appointing an architectural review board; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Department of Historic Resources be requested to designate the Town of Haymarket as an historic landmark; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the Department of Historic Resources in order that it may be apprised of the sense of the House of Delegates in this matter.
