WHEREAS, Margaret H. Updike, a pioneering political leader in Buena Vista and one of that city's most active and respected citizens, died on January 29, 1996; and

WHEREAS, a native of Big Island, Margaret Updike established an exemplary record of public service over a career that spanned three decades; and

WHEREAS, in 1968, Margaret Updike became the first woman elected to the Buena Vista City Council, where she served with great vigor, integrity, and effectiveness for ten years; and

WHEREAS, since the early 1970s, Margaret Updike served as the director of the Rockbridge Area Occupational Center, and her extraordinarily energetic advocacy for the center and its many clients made her a legendary figure; and

WHEREAS, known for her strong support of public education, Margaret Updike was instrumental in the establishment of both the Enderly Heights and Kling Elementary Schools in the city; and

WHEREAS, Margaret Updike was also an influential supporter of the purchase of Glen Maury Park and regularly donated her time and energy to clean-up efforts during the early days of the park; and

WHEREAS, during Margaret Updike's tenure on the Buena Vista City Council, the Municipal Building was constructed, and she was an early supporter of the attempts to gain flood control for the city; and

WHEREAS, Margaret Updike's respect and affection for the citizens of Buena Vista were the hallmarks of her long and energetic career of public service; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a uniquely gifted and generous public servant, Margaret H. Updike; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Margaret H. Updike as an expression of the high esteem in which her memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Buena Vista.
