WHEREAS, the General Assembly has taken action over the past several years to strengthen penalties for those convicted of domestic violence and improve awareness among the law-enforcement community and general public of the seriousness of this problem; and

WHEREAS, domestic violence may be the most common source of serious injury to women, accounting for almost three times as many visits for health care as motor vehicle crashes; and

WHEREAS, domestic violence has devastating effects on a woman's physical and emotional well-being and her ability to care for her children; and

WHEREAS, the first step toward unraveling the many layers of the nation's violence problem can begin with awareness; and

WHEREAS, the "Stop America's Violence Everywhere" program, known as SAVE, involves the spouses of physicians from all over the United States in efforts to end violence and help victims reclaim their lives; and

WHEREAS, members of the Medical Society of Virginia Alliance are leading the effort to urge the people of Virginia to search for ways to help find a solution to this problem by dedicating one day to raise awareness of the ways that people can solve violence problems in their own communities; and

WHEREAS, the month of October 1996 was designated as SAVE Month and October 9, 1996, as SAVE Today in Virginia by the 1996 General Assembly; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Medical Society of Virginia Alliance on its efforts to solve the problem of domestic violence; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That October 8, 1997, be hereby designated as SAVE Today for Tomorrow Day in Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Medical Society of Virginia Alliance as an expression of the General Assembly's continuing support for raising the awareness of the problem of domestic violence.
