WHEREAS, Mason T. New of Richmond, the managing partner and chief executive officer of a prominent Richmond brokerage firm, died on September 27, 1996; and
WHEREAS, a native of Richmond, Mason New graduated from Christchurch School, earned his college degree from Washington and Lee University in 1962, and worked as a systems engineer and marketing representative for IBM before joining Branch Cabell and Company in 1969; and
WHEREAS, in 1972, Mason New became a partner in Branch Cabell, and in 1975, he was named managing partner of the firm; and
WHEREAS, Mason New was prominent in a number of professional organizations, including the Virginia Securities Industry Association, the National Association of Securities Dealers, the Regional Firms Advisory Committee of the New York Stock Exchange, and the Regional Firms Committee of the Securities Industry Association; and
WHEREAS, Mason New was a member of the board of trustees of Washington and Lee University, which he previously served as president of the Alumni Association and member of the Alumni Board of Directors; and
WHEREAS, Mason New also served St. Catherine's School in Richmond, as a member of the board of governors and president of the school's foundation, and Christchurch School, as chairman of the board of directors and a member of the board of directors of the school's foundation; and
WHEREAS, remembered as a man who combined strong family ties, civic responsibility, and a remarkable work ethic, Mason New leaves an enduring legacy of service to his profession and his community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the untimely passing of an accomplished Virginian, Mason T. New; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Mason T. New as an expression of the General Assembly's abiding respect for his memory.
