WHEREAS, Gail Nuckols, an Arlington civic leader and long-time member of the Arlington County School Board, died on September 30, 1996; and

WHEREAS, a native of Brooklyn, New York, Gail Nuckols earned her college degree from the University of Michigan and moved to Arlington in 1963; and

WHEREAS, over the past 25 years, Gail Nuckols built an exemplary record of community service, most notably as a member of the Arlington County School Board, on which she served from 1983 to 1991, including three terms as chair; and

WHEREAS, her energy and determination tempered by grace, civility, and a sense of humor, Gail Nuckols was one of the most popular and effective of Arlington's leaders; and

WHEREAS, during her tenure on the school board, Arlington's schools converted junior high schools to middle schools, adopted a seven-period schedule for high schools, revised the science curriculum, and initiated a major capital improvement program; and

WHEREAS, in addition to her exceptional work on the school board, Gail Nuckols found time to serve Arlington's citizens on the Northern Virginia Community College Board; and

WHEREAS, Gail Nuckols was a member of the executive board of Arlingtonians for a Better County and a member of the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area Boards of Education, the Virginia School Boards Association, the Governor's Chapter II Block Grants Advisory Committee, and the University of Virginia's Continuing Education Advisory Committee; and

WHEREAS, Gail Nuckols also served on such organizations as the Arlington Committee of 100, the Commission to Study Arlington's Future, the League of Women Voters, and the Arlington Historical Society; and

WHEREAS, Gail Nuckols served the General Assembly as a legislative aide for the 48th House District; and

WHEREAS, Gail Nuckols leaves an enduring legacy of selflessness, energetic advocacy for Arlington County, and a pervasive civility that characterized her remarkable career of community service; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the untimely passing of a singularly dedicated citizen of the Commonwealth, Gail Nuckols; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Gail Nuckols as an expression of the high esteem in which her memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Arlington.
