HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 727
On the death of Joseph N. Bosserman.

WHEREAS, Joseph N. Bosserman, a former Dean of the University of Virginia School of Architecture and an instrumental figure in its growth and development, died on January 27, 1997; and

WHEREAS, a native of Harrisonburg, Joseph Bosserman earned his undergraduate degree in architecture from the University of Virginia and his master's degree from Princeton University; and

WHEREAS, an internationally known architect and educator, Joseph Bosserman joined the faculty of the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia in 1954, served as Assistant Dean for four years, then was appointed Dean in 1967; and

WHEREAS, during Joseph Bosserman's 14-year tenure as Dean, the University of Virginia School of Architecture grew dramatically in size and national stature; and

WHEREAS, from 150 students in 1967, the school grew to over 500 in 1981 and expanded to encompass the fields of architectural history, landscape architecture, and urban and environmental planning; and

WHEREAS, an avid traveler, Joseph Bosserman combined this passion with his profession, teaching and lecturing abroad at such institutions as the Kingston School of Art in London, the University of Madrid, Eton College, and the Universities of Ulm and Tubingen in Germany; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Bosserman was a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and the Royal Society of Arts in England and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, and the Raven Society at the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, throughout his long professional career, Joseph Bosserman left an indelible mark on the thousands of students of architecture who were influenced by his teaching, his scholarship, and his vision; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of an accomplished Virginian, Joseph N. Bosserman; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joseph N. Bosserman as an expression of great respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
