HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 721
On the death of James H. Gordon, Sr.

WHEREAS, James H. "Flash" Gordon, Sr., of Chesapeake, a champion and long-time supporter of youth activities, died on January 31, 1997; and

WHEREAS, born in North Carolina, James Gordon was a resident of South Norfolk whose commitment to his community and service to his city were praised by all and challenged by none; and

WHEREAS, while employed by the Ford Motor Company, James Gordon began an involvement with youth sports that spanned more than 40 years of service as a league director, league president, and field director for Pony Baseball/Softball, Incorporated, culminating with his service for most of his final 20 years as regional Colt director; and

WHEREAS, James Gordon was recognized for his service to youth athletics by his induction into the Wall of Fame for the Pony Baseball League in Washington, Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, James Gordon served as a member of the Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Commission, was a vital supporter of the development of recreational facilities throughout the City of Chesapeake, and served as a member of Chesapeake's Redevelopment and Housing Authority; and

WHEREAS, James Gordon was a persistent supporter of civic activities and was a stalwart of the South Norfolk Civic League, serving over the years in a wide variety of positions, including president; and

WHEREAS, James Gordon further broadened his involvement and service to his city with his participation in a number of positions for Chesapeake's annual Fourth of July celebration at Lakeside Park, serving at one time as president; and

WHEREAS, devoted to building and maintaining a vigorous electoral process, James Gordon was a fixture on election day at his polling precinct, even following his confinement to a wheelchair; and

WHEREAS, through a lifetime of dedication and setting a positive example, James H. Gordon, Sr., left an indelible mark on the community of South Norfolk and the City of Chesapeake; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a dedicated Virginian, James H. Gordon, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James H. Gordon, Sr., as an expression of the high esteem in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
