WHEREAS, 1997 marks the 30th anniversary of Rappahannock Big Brothers and Big Sisters, an organization that serves the youth of the City of Fredericksburg and the Counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford; and
WHEREAS, affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the nation's preeminent youth-serving organization for more than 90 years, the Rappahannock group serves area children between the ages of 7 and 15; and
WHEREAS, each Big Brother and Big Sister typically volunteers to assist one child, usually from a single-parent home, and acts as a mentor, role model, and friend; and
WHEREAS, studies have shown that those children matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister perform better in school, get along better with their families, and are less likely to be truant from school or to use alcohol and illegal drugs; and
WHEREAS, Big Brothers and Big Sisters often fill the gap left by a missing parent, help children overcome feelings of loss or rejection, help children succeed in school and in their relationships with others, and provide guidance and companionship from a caring adult; and
WHEREAS, Rappahannock Big Brothers and Big Sisters has for 30 years provided the children of its service area with positive, caring, and healthy adults as role models, to the ultimate benefit of the volunteers, the children, the communities, and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Rappahannock Big Brothers and Big Sisters on the occasion of its 30th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lisa Bales-Moroge, executive director of Rappahannock Big Brothers and Big Sisters, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for the fine work of this exceptional organization.
