HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 710
On the death of Robert T. Greene, Sr.

WHEREAS, Robert T. Greene, Sr., a native of Richmond and a leading educator and community leader, died on November 22, 1996; and

WHEREAS, Robert Greene was educated in the Richmond public schools, served in the U.S. Marine Corps, and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Virginia State University; and

WHEREAS, following completion of his doctorate at the University of Virginia in 1970, Dr. Greene served as elementary school principal, professor at the University of Virginia, administrator with the Virginia Department of Education and Virginia Union University, and provost of the downtown campus of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to his community throughout his professional career, Dr. Greene served on countless local, state, and national boards and commissions, including the Secretary's Advisory Council for Equal Education Opportunities, the Governor's Committee for Sexual Assault and Drug Abuse, and the National Council and Southern Regional Council on Black American Affairs; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Greene served the Richmond community in many ways, including membership on the Richmond Private Industry Council Board, the Bon Secours Health Corporation Board, and the MCV Advisory Committee; and

WHEREAS, for his generous contributions of time and talent, Dr. Greene was recognized with numerous community service awards, among them the Governor's Award for Volunteering Excellence and the Outstanding Community Service Award from the Urban League of Greater Richmond; and

WHEREAS, a man of great learning, accomplishment, and commitment, Dr. Robert Greene leaves an enviable and lasting legacy of service to his profession, his community, the Commonwealth, and the nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a distinguished Virginian, Robert T. Greene, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert T. Greene, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his lifetime of achievement and dedication.
