HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 695
Commending the Norfolk Southern Corporation, Radford University, and the Radford University National Alumni Association.

WHEREAS, last fall, members of the General Assembly and their families were afforded the opportunity to travel across the Commonwealth on a unique excursion train, the "Highland Express," which consisted of two locomotives and several vintage railway cars; and

WHEREAS, this opportunity to travel from the coast to the mountains was sponsored by the Norfolk Southern Corporation and the Radford University National Alumni Association; and

WHEREAS, originating in Norfolk, the train, which traveled to Southwest Virginia on November 29, 1996, with stops in Petersburg, Roanoke, Cambria, and Radford, was an integral part of the Commonwealth Day activities in Blacksburg, centered on the annual Virginia Tech-University of Virginia football game; and

WHEREAS, Radford University graciously hosted the General Assembly members at a brunch on the Radford University campus before the excursion returned to Norfolk on November 30; and

WHEREAS, the efforts of the Norfolk Southern Corporation and Radford University and its National Alumni Association contributed substantially to the success of Commonwealth Day; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly express its appreciation to the Norfolk Southern Corporation, Radford University, and the Radford University National Alumni Association for their sponsorship of the "Highland Express"; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly extend special appreciation to W. Bruce Wingo and Susan D. Bland of the Norfolk Southern Corporation and Charlotte M. Hawes and the fine special events and catering staff of Radford University for their invaluable assistance; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to David R. Goode, President, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of the Norfolk Southern Corporation; Douglas Covington, President of Radford University; James C. Stutts, Rector of the Radford University Board of Visitors; and Randal J. Duncan, President of the Radford University National Alumni Association, as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation for the success of the "Highland Express."
