1997 SESSION
WHEREAS, on a cold, rainy December afternoon in Fairfax, the Chantilly High School football team overcame both the elements and an extremely talented team from Danville to win the Virginia High School League Group AAA, Division 6, state championship; and
WHEREAS, relying on a powerful ground attack and a stifling defense, the Chantilly Chargers prevailed, 14-7, over previously undefeated George Washington High School of Danville; and
WHEREAS, the Chargers' defense yielded only 85 yards to the Eagles, forced four turnovers, and did not allow George Washington to cross mid-field in the second half; and
WHEREAS, in capping a 13-1 season with Chantilly's first football state championship, the Chargers and Head Coach Danny Meier rewarded their loyal supporters; and
WHEREAS, the triumph of the 1996 Chantilly High School football team is a tribute to the perseverance, teamwork, and adaptability of the players, the inspired leadership of the coaching staff, and the unwavering support of the parents, students, faculty, and staff of Chantilly High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly salute the Chantilly High School football team on their first state football championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Danny Meier in honor of the triumphant 1996 season of the Chargers of Chantilly High School.
