HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 688
Commending Charlotte Opal.

WHEREAS, Charlotte Opal of Falls Church is one of 32 students named to the 1997 class of Rhodes Scholars; and

WHEREAS, chosen from a group of nearly 1,000 students from over 300 U.S. colleges and universities, Charlotte Opal will begin her two years of study at England's Oxford University in the Fall of 1997; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Fairfax County's Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Charlotte Opal is fluent in English, French, and Spanish and speaks Japanese, which she learned while studying in Japan; and

WHEREAS, Charlotte Opal attends Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she is finishing an honors thesis on the stabilization of the Mexican peso; and

WHEREAS, Charlotte Opal's interest in Third World development will be enhanced by her studies at Oxford, after which she plans to work with the banking system and economic development efforts in Africa; and

WHEREAS, an exceptionally dedicated, well-rounded, talented, and motivated student, Charlotte Opal is a most worthy recipient of the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Charlotte Opal on being named a 1997 Rhodes Scholar; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Charlotte Opal as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes in her future endeavors.
