971346254WHEREAS, Judge G. O. Clemens of Salem, who has served for 17 years as a General District and Circuit Court judge, retired on January 1, 1997; and
WHEREAS, G. O. Clemens graduated from Virginia Tech, earned his law degree from Washington and Lee Law School, and received a master's degree in criminal law from Northwestern University; and
WHEREAS, prior to practicing law, G. O. Clemens served as the first law clerk to federal Judge Ted Dalton in Roanoke; and
WHEREAS, G. O. Clemens practiced law with the Salem firm of Kime, Jolly, Clemens and Jolly, Fralin and Clemens from 1962 until his appointment to the General District Court bench in 1979; and
WHEREAS, in February 1985, Judge Clemens was appointed a judge of the Circuit Court, where he served with great distinction until his retirement; and
WHEREAS, Judge Clemens plans to remain available as a substitute judge and will also continue his 30-year career as adjunct professor at Roanoke College; and
WHEREAS, throughout his career as an attorney and as a judge, Judge G. O. Clemens has served the citizens of Virginia with fairness, impartiality, and an admirable dedication to the cause of justice; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Judge G. O. Clemens on the completion of an exceptional career of public service; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Judge G. O. Clemens as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration, gratitude, and best wishes for a long and fulfilling retirement.
