1997 SESSION
WHEREAS, Janet Jones Ballard, a Richmond native, former president of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, and former official with Virginia Union University and Virginia State University, died on December 28, 1996; and
WHEREAS, a graduate of Armstrong High School in Richmond, Janet Ballard earned her undergraduate degree from Virginia Union University and did graduate work at Virginia State University; and
WHEREAS, Janet Ballard was a teacher in Brooklyn, New York, worked for the Richmond Department of Welfare as a case worker and child welfare worker, and served as the executive director of the Richmond Urban League in the early 1960s; and
WHEREAS, Janet Ballard was the director of alumni affairs at Virginia State University and later held the same post at her alma mater, Virginia Union University; and
WHEREAS, elected president-elect of Alpha Kappa Alpha in 1982, Janet Ballard served as president of the sorority, the nation's first Greek-letter organization established by and for black women, from 1986 to 1990; and
WHEREAS, during her tenure, Janet Ballard worked to improve educational opportunities for black women and to emphasize the heritage of black women in the arts; and
WHEREAS, Janet Ballard devoted enormous energy and countless hours to a wide variety of charitable and civic organizations, including the YMCA, the Children's Home Society of Virginia, the United Negro College Fund, and the United Way of Greater Richmond; and
WHEREAS, through a lifetime of dedication, accomplishment, and commitment, Janet Ballard leaves a lasting legacy of service to her community and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of an exceptional Virginian, Janet Jones Ballard; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Janet Jones Ballard as an expression of the General Assembly's deep and abiding respect for her memory.
