1997 SESSION
WHEREAS, Fredericksburg will host the 1997 Scottish Highland Games World Championships, the first time the event has been held on the East Coast and the first time in over a decade that it has been held in this country; and
WHEREAS, the Scottish Highland Games, a series of nine athletic events that trace their roots back 700 years to the time of Scottish kings, will be contested on June 13-15, 1997, in Fredericksburg; and
WHEREAS, competitors from many nations, including the United States, Scotland, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, will compete for the world title; and
WHEREAS, the Scottish Highland Games, which have been contested annually since 1980, will include many other events that will draw interested spectators to the Fredericksburg area for an exciting weekend; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate the week of June 8-15, 1997, as Scottish Highland Games Week in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the president of the Fredericksburg International Scottish Highland Games and Irish Festival as an expression of the General Assembly's welcome to the participants and spectators at the Scottish Highland Games World Championships.
