HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 586
Expressing the sense of the General Assembly that high school graduates in Virginia should be computer literate.

WHEREAS, the demands for knowledge and skills with regard to technology, computers, computer software, and the internet are growing among public and private employers; and

WHEREAS, currently an estimated 10,000 or more jobs that require competency in the use of computers or other advanced technology are not being filled in Northern Virginia because of the lack of sufficient technological training of potential employees; and

WHEREAS, additionally, the use of advanced technology, computers, and the internet may be necessary for citizens to be fully informed in the future; and

WHEREAS, for Virginia to continue to be known as the Silicon Dominion, its work force will need a high degree of skill in the use of technology and a strong foundation for continued education in those fields that require advanced technological and computer training; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That high school graduates in Virginia should be computer literate to meet the needs of Virginia's employers for a highly skilled work force, and the need to maximize the economic opportunities of Virginia's high school graduates; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That high school graduates should be competent to operate personal computers and use software frequently used by employers in Virginia and be computer literate consistent with the applicable Standards of Learning; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the President of the Board of Education, the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the President of the Virginia Education Association, and the Director of the Virginia School Boards Association, requesting that they further disseminate copies of this resolution among their respective constituencies in order that they may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly in this matter.
