HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 531 Commending the Fairfax Education Association.

WHEREAS, the Fairfax Education Association was founded in 1946, when a group of educators from the then-rural county began to meet to discuss mutual professional concerns; and

WHEREAS, shortly thereafter, the Fairfax Education Association was formally organized and Kathryn Hopper was elected first president; and

WHEREAS, the changes during the Fairfax Education Association's half-century of existence mirror those of Fairfax County, as the Fairfax Education Association has grown in size, in influence, in the services it offers members, and in its commitment to educational excellence; and

WHEREAS, long dedicated to the interests of the individual classroom teacher, the Fairfax Education Association made history in 1966, when it signed the first recognized school employee collective bargaining agreement in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the Fairfax Education Association has since continued its pace-setting activities, winning increased salaries for teachers with advanced graduate degrees, establishing the position of teacher aide, and representing educational support personnel; and

WHEREAS, housed since 1988 in its permanent headquarters in Fairfax City, the Fairfax Education Association continues to represent the welfare of Fairfax County teachers and school employees, to the ultimate benefit of thousands of Fairfax County schoolchildren; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Fairfax Education Association on the occasion of its golden anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to President N. Yvonne Jukes as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the exceptional accomplishments of the Fairfax Education Association.
