1997 SESSION
973637252WHEREAS, the 1996 men's soccer team from the College of William and Mary completed one of the finest seasons in the school's history; and
WHEREAS, the champion of the Colonial Athletic Association, the William and Mary soccer team finished the regular season with a record of 18-2-1, including a streak of 16 games without a defeat; and
WHEREAS, entering the NCAA soccer tournament, William and Mary was one of four seeded teams in the 32-team field, an honor that escaped larger, more well-known teams from around the country; and
WHEREAS, in the NCAA tournament, Coach Al Albert's Tribe defeated a stubborn Army team, 3-1, to advance to the second round against the Atlantic Coast Conference champions from the University of Maryland; and
WHEREAS, on a rainy, windy field in College Park, Maryland, the Tribe prevailed over Maryland, 3-0, to move only one victory away from the NCAA Final Four; and
WHEREAS, only a narrow defeat to the Redmen of St. John's, the eventual tournament champions, prevented the Tribe from William and Mary from even greater glory; and
WHEREAS, in finishing with a record of 20-3-1, the William and Mary men's soccer team finished the 1996 campaign well-established as one of the finest teams in the country; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the men's soccer team from the College of William and Mary on the completion of an outstanding 1996 season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Al Albert in honor of the Tribe's exceptional performance.
