WHEREAS, the Virginia Symphony has served the citizens of Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth since 1921; and

WHEREAS, from its humble beginnings over 75 years ago, the Virginia Symphony has grown into a fully professional, 77-member ensemble that today is recognized as one of the nation's finest regional orchestras; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Symphony presents 150 performances per year for audiences that total over 200,000 people; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Symphony is under the talented direction of JoAnn Falletta, an internationally acclaimed conductor and an enthusiastic and energetic leader; and

WHEREAS, on April 15, 1997, the Virginia Symphony will represent the Commonwealth at New York City's famed Carnegie Hall; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Symphony will perform the New York debut of a piano concerto by Virginia composer Adolphus Hailstork, a professor of music and composer-in-residence at Norfolk State University; and

WHEREAS, this debut performance by the Virginia Symphony will provide New Yorkers with a pleasure familiar to Virginians--a brilliant musical experience provided by the talented musicians of the Virginia Symphony; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Virginia Symphony on its long and meritorious service to Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Maestra JoAnn Falletta in honor of the Virginia Symphony's debut performance at Carnegie Hall.
