HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 486
Designating May as Paddle Virginia Waters Month.

WHEREAS, paddlesports are defined by the Virginia Professional Paddlesports Association as canoeing, kayaking, and rafting; and

WHEREAS, all three activities involve propelling a canoe, kayak, or raft by means of a paddle, oar, or pole, without the use of mechanical or motorized propulsion; and

WHEREAS, paddlesports are a singularly healthy and environmentally benign activity enjoyed by thousands of Virginians; and

WHEREAS, with its wealth of beautiful rivers, streams, and lakes, the Commonwealth offers unique opportunities for those who participate in paddlesports; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Professional Paddlesports Association promotes the safe enjoyment of this growing sport, whether for exercise, recreation, training, touring, or competitive purposes; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate the month of May, in 1997 and in each succeeding year, as Paddle Virginia Waters Month; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly encourage the citizens of Virginia to continue their safe, responsible, and enjoyable participation in paddlesports; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the president of the Virginia Professional Paddlesports Association in order to apprise the members of the association of the sense of the General Assembly in this matter.
