WHEREAS, paddlesports are defined by the Virginia Professional Paddlesports Association as canoeing, kayaking, and rafting; and

WHEREAS, all three activities involve propelling a canoe, kayak, or raft by means of a paddle, oar, or pole, without the use of mechanical or motorized propulsion; and

WHEREAS, paddlesports are a singularly healthy and environmentally benign activity enjoyed by thousands of Virginians; and

WHEREAS, with its wealth of beautiful rivers, streams, and lakes, the Commonwealth offers unique opportunities for those who participate in paddlesports; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Professional Paddlesports Association promotes the safe enjoyment of this growing sport, whether for exercise, recreation, training, touring, or competitive purposes; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate the month of May, in 1997 and in each succeeding year, as Paddle Virginia Month; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly encourage the citizens of Virginia to continue their safe, responsible, and enjoyable participation in paddlesports.
