On the death of Henry Abner Davis, Jr.

WHEREAS, Henry Abner Davis, Jr., who served the Norfolk public schools for over 30 years as teacher and principal, died on June 14, 1996; and

WHEREAS, a native of Lynchburg, Henry Davis was educated in the Lynchburg public schools and earned his college degrees at West Virginia State College and the Teachers' College, New York University; and

WHEREAS, in 1949, Henry Davis accepted a teaching position at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, where he taught for the next 14 years; and

WHEREAS, Henry Davis was appointed principal of John T. West Elementary School in 1963, later served as principal of Monroe Elementary School, and retired in 1975 as principal of Norview Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his dedicated service to the Norfolk schools, Henry Davis was active in a wide array of professional, civic, and charitable organizations for many years; and

WHEREAS, among the many beneficiaries of his time and talents were the YMCA, which named him Man of the Year in 1985, the Boy Scouts of America, the Norfolk Principals' and Teachers' Associations, Norfolk General Hospital, and Saint John's A.M.E. Church; and

WHEREAS, described by admirers as "a man for all seasons" and "an educator of the first magnitude," Henry Davis, through his professional career and his many civic and charitable activities, proved worthy of both descriptions; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of a singularly accomplished Virginian, Henry Abner Davis, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Henry Abner Davis, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his career of service to the people of Norfolk and the Commonwealth.
