HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 412
Commending the Patrick Henry High School girls' track and field team.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 10, 1997
Agreed to by the Senate, January 16, 1997

WHEREAS, the girls' track and field team from Patrick Henry High School in Washington County won the 1996 Virginia High School League Group A state championship; and

WHEREAS, the triumph of the Rebels from Patrick Henry High School was a team effort, made more remarkable by the modest expectations for the team at the beginning of the season; and

WHEREAS, surprising opponents throughout the year, the Patrick Henry girls won the Inter-Mountain Relays, the district and regional championships, and finally the state title in a close battle with New Kent High School; and

WHEREAS, receiving vital points from many of the team's members, the Rebels entered the final event in the state meet trailing by 2 1/2 points, then won with a clutch performance by the 1,600-meter relay team; and

WHEREAS, with their consistently strong performance throughout the 1996 season, the Patrick Henry girls brought home to Washington County the first state title in the outstanding 21-year career of Head Coach Becky Selfe; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly salute the Patrick Henry High School girls' track and field team on its well-earned state championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Becky Selfe in honor of the triumphant performance of the Rebels from Patrick Henry High School.
