975900296WHEREAS, Mark Lenzi, a resident of Fredericksburg, capped an astonishing comeback by taking the bronze medal in 3-meter springboard diving at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta; and
WHEREAS, a diver only since his senior year at Stafford Senior High School, from which he graduated in 1986, Mark Lenzi won the gold medal in springboard diving at the 1992 Olympics; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his Olympic success, Mark Lenzi has won seven U.S. springboard diving championships and 17 international diving competitions; and
WHEREAS, in 1992, Mark Lenzi was a finalist for the Sullivan Award, given to the nation's outstanding amateur athlete; and
WHEREAS, following his string of championships in the early 1990s, Mark Lenzi retired from diving, only to once again become interested in the sport in 1995, barely enough time to prepare himself for the 1996 Olympic Games; and
WHEREAS, despite nearly two years of inactivity, Mark Lenzi came back, made the U.S. diving team at the Olympic trials, and went on to earn his second Olympic medal at the 1996 Games in Atlanta; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Mark Lenzi for his courage, his perseverance, and his remarkable success as an Olympic athlete; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mark Lenzi as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations on his many athletic triumphs.
