WHEREAS, Michelle Kang, a resident of Stafford County, was named Miss Virginia for 1996 at the 43rd annual pageant in Roanoke; and

WHEREAS, a 1992 graduate of Stafford Senior High School and a 1996 graduate of the College of William and Mary, Michelle Kang won the Miss Virginia title over a field of 23 other contestants; and

WHEREAS, a proficient classical pianist, Michelle Kang easily won the talent portion of the pageant; and

WHEREAS, Michelle Kang's year-long reign as Miss Virginia will provide her the platform to further her favorite cause, the prevention of child abuse; and

WHEREAS, Michelle Kang has served as a member of the Governor's Commission on Family Violence Prevention Task Group, Effects of Violence on Children; as a member of the advisory council of the Action Alliance for Virginia's Children and Youth; as a court appointed special advocate for abused and neglected children; and as a judicial intern for a juvenile and domestic relations court judge; and

WHEREAS, with her scholarly accomplishments and her already extensive experience in the field, Michelle Kang will prove a most worthy advocate for those Virginians least able to defend themselves: children; and

WHEREAS, with the substantial scholarship assistance that goes to Miss Virginia, Michelle Kang plans to further her education and pursue a career as an effective children's advocate; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Michelle Kang on being named Miss Virginia 1996; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Michelle Kang as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her extraordinary accomplishments.
