Whereas, the Town of Haymarket had its genesis in colonial times, upon the opening of the Carolina Trail in 1722; and

Whereas, the Town of Haymarket, situated at the crossroads of the Old North-South Indian Trail, the Darolina Road and the East-West fork of the Dumfries Road, contributed to the expansion of our country; and

Whereas, the Town of Haymarket, known earlier as "Red House," was host to the Revolutionary war militia and to many famous founders of our country, including George Washington and Lafayette, and later to Generals Lee, Longstreet, and Stuart; and

Whereas, the Town of Haymarket has sought to preserve its identity by adopting an historic overlay ordinance and appointing an architectural review board; now, therefore,

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

01. § 1. That the Town of Haymarket is hereby designated as an historic landmark and shall be included in the State Historic Landmark Register.
