974691202Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 6 as amended of Chapter 99 of the Acts of Assembly of 1940 is amended and reenacted as follows:
§ 6. [ The office of town sergeant shall
may be filled by a majority vote of the
councilmen. The town council may, by a majority vote,
appoint a town sergeant. ] The town sergeant shall qualify by
taking the oath prescribed by the Code of Virginia and give bond in such amount
as the council may require. He shall be vested with powers of a conservator of
the peace, and shall have the same powers and discharge the same duties as a
constable within the corporate limits of the town and to a distance of one mile
beyond the same, and shall perform such other duties as may be from time to
time prescribed by the council.
